Exercises For Seniors

July 21st, 2009 by · No Comments · Uncategorized

Walking at a brisk pace is simply the single best exercise you can perform. If you are fifty years of age or older, it should be your activity of choice. To reach your goal of optimal health, resolve today to begin a regular program of walking, at a pace which will provide an excellent cardiovascular workout.
Before beginning any exercise routine, especially after age fifty, you would be wise to consult your physician. If there is anything on your chart that would call for caution, your doctor will so advise you. I am sixty five years of age and I enjoy brisk walking for one hour each day. I am careful not to exceed my maximum heart rate which is 155 beats per minute.
The target heart rate for me, for the greatest benefit, is seventy to eighty five percent of the maximum heart rate. That would be anywhere between 109 and 132 beats per minute. I maintain a rate of 120 beats per minute throughout my walk. You might not be able to exercise every day and you do not need to. If you are walking for 30 minutes three times a week or every other day that will be sufficient as long as you are training at a pace which will raise your pulse to the target rate for aerobic conditioning. If your heart rate is higher than the target for your age, slow down.
Taking your pulse as you walk is easy. Wear a watch and midway through your walk, stop for a few seconds to check your heart rate. This can be done by gently touching your neck or left wrist. When you feel the pulse, count the number of beats for a period of 10 seconds. Now multiply that by six. If for example you are 55 years of age and counted 22 heart beats in the 10 second time frame, your training heart rate is 132 beats per minute. That fits perfectly within the desirable range of seventy percent to eighty five percent of the maximum heart rate of 165 beats per minute.
Now you might be inclined to say you do not need to walk, you get enough exercise doing the household chores or walking to the car. Perhaps you play golf or go bowling. All of these activities are signs of life because while performing them, you are moving, but walking is different. Other exercises are good. Walking is great.
Here are just a few of the reasons for you to consider walking for health and well being. The degree of difficulty is low. You warm up and cool down by performing the exact same motion used during the walk, only you walk a little slower. It is a low intensity exercise with more time spent at a less strenuous level. You can do it alone or with friends. You can take your dog with you. During times of severe or inclement weather, you can move to an indoor track or mall.
Walking is basically an injury free activity, especially when compared to jogging. It is an excellent stress manager. No special skills are needed. No special equipment is required other than comfortable clothing and good walking shoes. Walking briskly provides an excellent cardiovascular workout. It develops muscle tone, endurance, strength and agility.
Walking out of doors amid pleasant surroundings gives you time and space to reflect. A good walk can lift you out of depressions, clear the mind, lift the spirit and even set the stage for problem solving later that day. You will lose fat, improve circulation, and expel waste matter through the lungs and skin. Increased intestinal motility results from the gentle swaying of the internal organs. Finally, walking fine tunes the metabolism, regulates the appetite, and increases your energy.
If you are between 50 and 100, a regular program of exercise can change your life and go a long way towards the prevention of diseases associated with aging. Why not get started this week? Speak to your doctor. Line up some comfortable clothing and break out those walking shoes. Aerobic walking is the best exercise, the best means, to eliminate or prevent sickness and suffering from your life, while extending your life expectancy.

You’ll for sure find help in the anti-aging merchandises but, it is better for you to alter your life so that you are keeping a healthy attitude. Your skin care is at the top elevation of the list with seeing after the rest of your body.
If you want to heighten your beauty, then sound skin is in truth the most authoritative matter you must take to heart. With this article we bring in the 10 most authoritative skin care tips we could find. In that respect are more but notwithstanding, these are the top ten skin care tips:
Not every skin care product works for everybody. It all depends on the type of skin the end user has. If you first know your skin type, that is one of the most important skin care factor to learn.
Always drink a good deal of H2O. This won’t sustain your skin moisture but will assist in overall maintenance of your wellness (and successively your skin). It may appear a bit ungainly to some, all the same, this is a significant skin care tip.
Clean your skin on a regular basis (1-2 times day-after-day). A really efficient skin care tip that assists in eliminating the grime and other unkind constituents from your skin. Purifying is particularly of importance once you have been out of your home (and therefore exposed to pollutants, debris etc). This skin care tip as well recommends the use of warm water for cleanup (hot and cold water, both, cause harm to your skin).
Keep your skin moist at all times. Likewise, do not implement too much or too many skin care products. A must-to-follow skin care tip. Use emollients that a gentle. Moisturisers work best when applied while the skin is still damp. This is a crucial skin care tip. Dryness causes the outer layer of your skin to break, leading to a rough and unattractive appearance. Be gentle, after all it’s your skin. Don’t scrub nor exfoliate too hard or too often.
Do not use soap on your face. When using soap remember it should be used only below the neck. This is a minute skincare tip.
Use sunblock to protect yourself from sunlights adverse UV radiations. You can use day moisturizers that have sunscreen built into them. Use them even while it’s murky. UV radiations are acknowledged to cause skin cancer, so conform to this skin care tip without neglect.
A bit of exercise and good sleep are essential too, not just for skin care but for your health as a whole. Lack of sleep can lead to formation of wrinkles below your eyes and lack of exercise can cause your skin to slack. Moreover, exercise and sleep also help in beating stress. So besides being a skin care tip, this is also a health care tip.
Treat skin dilemmas with care. This skin care tip is about not ignoring any skin dilemmas.
Beat the stress. The harmful effects of stress are known to everyone, however, sometimes stating the obvious is essential too (and hence this skin care tip found its place here). Yes, stress harms skin too. So, take a break or indulge in a warm bubble bath or just get good sleep.
If you want a healthy glow then your skin care routine can help. With a good attitude and discipline you may be able to stall the process of aging for atleast a few years. With the right anti aging skin care products you will look more youthful than ever.

Antiques Mean Something Different To Everyone

July 21st, 2009 by · No Comments · Uncategorized

Many people, myself included love the look of old things. We love to furnish our homes with old furniture and different nick knacks that have come from a different era. Many of these things are antiques while many are just old looking. It has become very popular these days to decorate your house with older looking furniture. Many manufacturers make modern furniture that look like antiques but in fact are not.
This is a cheaper way for people to have the look without the expense. Of course they also miss out on the history that goes with the original piece. But for many people including myself it is an option that we welcome. Many of my original antiques are things that have been handed down through the generations of my family. These things I really treasure. Then the rest are copies that blend in very well with the look that I like.
I could not tell you if any of my antiques are very valuable or not but I must say that I love them because of the way they look, their craftsmanship and of course for their sentimental value. It is such a shame to think that so many antiques have been thrown out or destroyed over time because they were old and not fashionable any more.
If you are someone who really loves the original product whether it be furniture, cars, glass wear, dolls and so on and you want to purchase some then you should know a little bit about antiques. If you don’t, then ask someone who does to help you. There are so many people out there ready to rip you off so you should be well armed. Just because something looks old and you love it does not mean it is worthy of an expensive antique price tag.
Of course, in the end if you’ve got the money and that is what you want then price doesn’t really matter but generally for the average person you should only pay what the product is truly worth. Especially if you want this product as an investment as many collectors do.
You need to learn about things such as certain markings or numbers to look for on some antiques. It is a way of knowing that they are original. It’s sad to think that there are also many remakes that are being sold as the originals when they are really just excellent copies. That is why it is important to learn a few things.
Ask around to find an antique dealer that has a good reputation. Then go and talk to him or her about what you are interested in. They can be a great source of information. There are also many good books that will be very helpful and educational. Once you arm yourself with this knowledge then you can start shopping with confidence.

What’s Your Worth?

July 21st, 2009 by · No Comments · Uncategorized

Persuasion is a vast field of study and we will continue to explore all of persuasion, only now we’re focusing with laser-like precision on the defined goal of selling to the affluent and activating within ourselves affluent mindsets.
When we define our goals, our targets, our specific & particular paths – we set our intention.
I have set out to define affluence more fully recently. The dictionary’s definition is not expansive enough for our purposes because of how individualized our perspectives are, but it’s a good place to start.
Affluence: 1. A plentiful supply of material goods; wealth. 2. A great quantity; an abundance. 3. A flowing to or toward point.
The definition is somewhat vague. Affluence is a ‘great quantity’ but a ‘great quantity’ compared to what? Affluence is a ‘plentiful supply’ but a ‘plentiful supply’ compared to what?
When we get down to it, affluence is a combination of these three factors:
1. net worth
2. cash flow
3. disposable income
Of course that’s going to vary wildly from audience to audience so we have to define affluence for ourselves.
For you, what you consider affluent today – if you raised your own level of wealth in any or all of those three areas – you might not find affluence tomorrow.
The goal is to constantly set the bar higher and continue to grow and progress.
If you’re an adviser and today you have people that have a million dollar net worth… Well, maybe a year from now you’re selling people that have a million dollars in cash that they can put into your program.
Then three or four years down the road your clients have much larger net worths and three or four million in cash that they can invest with you. You can achieve that kind of change with these skills.
It is about the evolution of you, of your business, and your ability to provide wealth for yourself and your family.
Persuasion is powerful
For myself, when I was first starting out, my clients were college kids who could barely afford to pay attention, let alone pay for my courses.
As I grew, honed my skills, realized my value, developed this field of work, I also adjusted my relationship to affluence. The clients I began attracting are worth a considerable amount and I believe this is all related to how much I feel I’m worth.
As it was for me, the evolution of your own wealth and your relation to affluence is directly related to how much you feel you are worth.
Here’s an exercise for you:
Examine your relationship with affluence. Chart out an affluence map from the perspective of you 15 years ago, 10 years ago, 5 years ago.
Once that’s mapped out, look at that piece of paper and see past the edge of the sheet to the vast territory of your future. Our affluence mindsets are about to jump off the charts.

Interviewing Skills Made Fun and Easy

July 21st, 2009 by · No Comments · Uncategorized

Most people believe that interviewing is easy and it involves very little skill. They see the process of simply sitting in a room with a candidate asking a variety of questions, and then trusting your gut level response about the person. This approach will not yield the most qualified candidates for the organization. Effective interviewing is a developed skill that can be mastered with practice, patience, and perseverance.
Before I address how to conduct an effective Interview, I want to first cover what not to do. These are the ten major pitfalls to be avoided.
Failure to know the job requirements : This is where the interviewer hasn’t done their homework and is not sufficiently briefed to know what the job requires.
Talking too much :  Some people are uncomfortable with the interviewing process. They will ask a question, and if the candidate doesn’t answer immediately they will fill the silence, or they will start talking about themselves.
Using a disorganized approach  : During the interview he jumps from topic to topic. He may ask a question, and then start talking about the company. There is little structure to the meeting.
Not being fully prepared : This is the person who rushes in at the last moment, preoccupied with what has just transpired, and can’t find his interviewing materials.
Telegraphing the desired response : This is where you unconsciously let the person know what response you are looking for from the candidate.
Jumping to conclusions : This is where you don’t wait until all the data is gathered and you jump to a conclusion, which may or may not be accurate.
Capturing only the obvious : Each candidate wants you to see only their best side. They will try to conceal any weaknesses or character flaws. If you only capture the obvious, your will not have conducted a thorough interview.
Concluding with insufficient, irrelevant data to make an accurate assessment and evaluation:If you draw conclusions with inaccurate or inadequate data, it is unfair to the candidate and to your company because frankly it has proved to be a waste of everyone’s time.
Impatience : When you become impatient you are not in present time. You probably are stressed, have too much on your plate, and are not giving the person a fair deal.
Pre-conceived notions, pre-judging outcomes : When you enter the interview with preconceived notions and ideas you are often not open to what will present itself in the meeting to you.

The purpose of the job interview is to gather sufficient, relevant data to be able to accurately assess and evaluate applicants so that you will make the right choice about the person/job match and positively influence the applicant to make the right choice about their future.
Studies have discovered that people who follow their preferences, rather than their competencies have more job satisfaction for the long term. For instance, a candidate might be a terrific typist, but they love to travel and would ideally love to be a tour guide. If that person gets a job as a typist, they will be dissatisfied and listless.
There are 4 key answers that you want to be certain that you can answer after the interview is complete.
They are:
Does the applicant have the ability to do the job? Does the applicant want to do the job (is it his/her preference)?
Ability and desire are two important qualifiers. If the person possesses the ability, but not the desire, there is a potential problem, and if they possess the desire, but not the ability, there is an obvious problem.
Does the applicant fit into the organizational culture?
Is this the best person for the job? Will they feel comfortable and at home in their new job? The person must integrate into the culture otherwise the situation will result in a short-term engagement rather than a long-term commitment. When people feel like they don’t belong they end up leaving when presented with the opportunity. You ultimately want to choose the very best candidate for the job, not just someone who is acceptable, available, or presents well.

To help you determine whether this applicant is the right one for the job, here are some areas that address these specific questions.
To answer the question, “does the applicant have the ability?” we examine his/her capabilities, skills, experience, education, knowledge, technical expertise, specialized training, analytical skills, accomplishments, and flexibility to show that they know and have experienced a similar situation. You always want to ask questions rather than assuming that a person has the abilities and know-how.
To answer the question, “Is this job the person’s preference?” we look at Motivation/Desire, behavior, preferences, interests, their goals, their drive and energy, their reliability, cooperation and taking initiative.
To answer the question of the candidate’s fit into the organizational culture, we ask about their need for structure, autonomy, freedom, direction, and independence. We also want to know if their values are aligned with the majority of the group. Where these questions don’t constitute a legitimate “knock-out punch” they do provide some indicators of long-term integration or expulsion. Here are some excellent questions for you to ask when you are conducting the interview…
What qualities do you bring to the job? Why did you leave your last job? What are your major accomplishments? What gives you satisfaction? What has been your most rewarding experience? What was your favorite subject in college? Why did you choose your university? Why did you choose your major? Why have you chosen our company? What are you looking to gain from working in our company? What do you know about our company? What is most important to you in a job? What did you like best about your last job? What did you like least about your last job? What was the biggest challenge you faced in your last job? What was the most frustrating experience you encountered in your last job? What is your ultimate career goal? What criteria are you using to evaluate the company you will choose? Tell me about leadership positions you have held? Where do you see yourself at age 40 (50, 60)? What is your best asset and your biggest challenge? What community service have you done? What is the profile of your ideal boss? Why should I hire you for this position? Why would you be the best candidate for the job? How do you like to spend your time when you are not working? How would you rank your achievements? How would your friends describe you? How would you describe your management style? What appeals to you about this job and this organization? What qualities do you think make someone successful in our company? Give an example of a situation where you demonstrated leadership. For instance, what was the toughest decision that you have made professionally? What was the greatest ethical challenge to your leadership? What questions do you have about our organization? Did you get all of those? If you missed any, you can go back and review the training.

By the way, It is illegal (in the U.S.) for an interviewer to ask questions pertaining to the following subjects:
Sex, Age, Race, Religion, National Origin, Marital Status and offspring, Anything not directly job-related

Make Brochure Printing Work For You

July 20th, 2009 by · No Comments · Uncategorized

A brochure can be printed in either black and white or color and they can be designed in a variety of ways. Using word processing software or brochure templates, you can design a brochure online and print it yourself or add the file to a disk for your local brochure printing business. If you are having your products printed by a professional printing service, most will accept digital submissions, which may include 3.5´´ diskette, CD-Rom or e-mail file. In addition, they may ask that you layout the brochure on their own special layout sheet for printing. It all depends on the printer and how they do business, so be sure to ask their requirements before getting too heavy into the design process.
When ordering brochures from a printer, you can save big bucks if you buy in bulk. The rule of thumb for printing is that the more your order, the more you save. As the quantity increases, the cost per brochure decreases. The majority of the printing cost usually comes from the general use of the equipment. The ink and paper used aren´t usually the main source of cost. If at all possible, order larger quantities, but don´t overdo it. If you cannot foresee yourself realistically distributing thousands of brochures over the period of a year, then don´t order such a large amount. Try to stay within a realistic distribution number while keeping the costs as low as possible.
The cover of a brochure should be eye-catching and grab the attention of consumers. If possible, use a quality photo for the cover, along with your business name and the nature of your organization. Do you sell sports memorabilia? How about a large collection of sports memorabilia on the front? What about antique glassware? If that´s your specialty, find the prettiest piece in your inventory and photograph it for the cover. The bottom line is to draw consumers into your business, but you only have one chance to get their interest – the cover. If you don´t grab their interest there, it will be unlikely that they will take a brochure. Colorful is always good, so add color if it´s within your budget.
Brochure printing can take anywhere from one to several weeks depending on the backlog of the printer. Orders are usually filled as they are submitted and, before the final print run, you may be asked to come in and view a sample. It´s important to remember that, before submitting your final design, all corrections and proofing should be completed. Once a design is submitted, there will be a very small window, if any, to make changes. Once the design is at the printer, there may be no chance to make corrections. At times, you may be called in to view a sample that was created digitally or possibly generated as a computer print, but not always.
A professional brochure printing business will offer several design, color and layout options. Two-fold and three-fold are the most common, but some businesses do just offer one single paper brochure, which is printed on the front and back. Black and white printing should always be more economical than color, but most decisions will be determined by a reasonable budget.

Start the process and save yourself

If you are trying to prevent yourself from drinking too much alcohol at social gatherings or even in your daily life, there are certain things you should know about how to live a life that is balanced and alcohol-free. Here are a few ways that you can keep your alcohol intake under control. One of the best things you can do to monitor your drinking is to plan your social life carefully. If you want to stay away from alcohol, try to make sure that you are not always in tempting settings where alcohol is served. If you usually go to lounges and parties where there is a bartender or cocktails, try going to the movies or pack a picnic instead. Not only will this give you and your friends something different to do when you go out, but you can be sure that you won’t have to deal with the pressure of drinking if you feel it may get out of control. In addition, the people that you are hanging out with won’t be drinking either, which takes the pressure off tremendously.
It is likely that the stress of her husband’s nine-month terminal illness caused her to fall back into heavy drinking. It is only three months since his death, and she is probably using alcohol to numb her grief. It is also possible that she may feel humiliated and ashamed that her excessive drinking is apparent to others, and she just wants to avoid the issue entirely. There are two positive factors in this scenario: that she managed once to quit drinking for several years and that she continues to visit her physician on a regular basis. I would suggest that it would be counterproductive at this time to confront her about her drinking. It would be unfortunate to drive her away from medical contact and lose her trust. Instead, the focus should be on her grief and how she is coping with the loss of her husband. Bereavement counseling should be offered.
Warning signs of alcoholism may vary form person to person. Usually though these warning signs will be obvious. The following list outlines some of these signs. – misses a lot of work or school – losses interest in family, friends or activities – depression – drinking to cope with any problem – insomnia – being intoxicated often – moody – drinking related health problems These are some of the noticeable warning signs. More serious behaviors can also serve as a wake-up call. Risky behavior like drinking and driving should be taken seriously. At the very least stop drinking 4 – 6 hours before going to bed. This grace period will allow your body a chance to for the effects of the alcohol to wear off and reduce the effects that it may have on your sleeping, helping you to sleep without snoring.Sedatives such as sleeping pills behave much in the same way as alcohol, and amplify the affect if you take them while drinking, causing your body to relax its muscles and inducing many of the same symptoms as alcohol. When you snore, you not only do you hurt yourself – studies have shown that a spouse, or significant other, can lose up to an hour of sleep per night. Causing them not only to be ‘cranky’ in the morning, but potentially destroying your relationship. So, don’t just do it for yourself – do it for your loved one!
Alcohol addiction is a serious problem that can escalate to gigantic proportions if left untreated. Alcoholism has been known to be and is till today, one of the major causes of family and relationship breakdowns and psychological illnesses. Not only this, it is a major cause of premature deaths all over the world. Therefore, it is imperative that professional help be sought the moment the problem of alcoholism is diagnosed. Most people turn to self help groups when it comes to de-addiction and alcohol recovery. While this is an extremely important part of the process of getting rid of alcohol addiction, getting medical help and treatment is just as important when it comes to alcohol recovery. People who are serious about kicking their alcohol addiction should definitely involve an alcohol rehabilitation center in their quest for an alcohol free existence. Keep in mind that it is not necessary to check yourself in and stay admitted in a rehab center, but that it is important that you involve the experts in your fight against alcohol dependency. These centers are the best source of help and support for alcohol recovery.
Fetal Alcohol Effects or FAE causes fewer problems but the issues are still serious. Children born with FAE may face a lifetime of handicaps that will limit their potential. These children often need special care throughout their lifetimes. If this is not enough to convince you that drinking alcohol can be dangerous to an unborn baby, here are some other possibilities. A baby affected by alcohol may have a small body size and weight. He may develop at a slower rate and have problems catching up to other children his age. He may be born with a deformed sternum and ribs. A curved spine and hip dislocations may be present as well as missing, bent, fused or webbed fingers or toes. He may have limited movement in his joints and small eye openings. Babies who have mothers who drink alcohol during pregnancy may be born with facial abnormalities, small jaws, thin upper lips and short, upturned noses. They may be nearsighted or have drooping eyelids. The ears are sometimes low-set or poorly formed.
Your general health and quality of life will be improved if you stop drinking. In addition, those who live with you and care about you will see an improved quality of life if you stop drinking alcohol. Alcohol abuse or dependence has a number of serious health problems that can be reduced by discontinuing your bad habits. It also decreases your risk of getting into an alcohol related accident that can injure yourself or others around you. Relationships with parents, children and spouses will also be improved by cutting back on your drinking habits. Children and teens in your household will have great benefits by seeing your good role model and behavior example.
Studies show that some individuals are more likely to experience alcoholism at some point in their lives than others. For example, genetics can play a role in whether or not a person is likely to be drawn to alcohol. Often the children of alcoholics will have a higher risk of one day becoming an alcoholic themselves. Psychological problems also increase the risk for alcoholism. Individuals suffering from depression, attention deficit disorder, bipolar disorder and many other psychological disorders often turn to alcohol to make them feel better or ease their suffering. This often turns into a dependency. There are many health problems that are caused by alcoholism. Alcoholism depresses the central nervous system. Over time, alcoholism can cause fatigue, paralysis of the muscles surrounding the eyes and short-term memory loss. Other, more life-threatening health problems caused by alcoholism include cirrhosis of the liver, high blood pressure, heart failure, stroke, gastrointestinal problems, neurological disorders, sexual dysfunction and bone loss. Alcoholism also increases the risk of certain cancers, such as cancer of the esophagus, larynx, liver and colon. If left untreated, alcoholism can lead to death.

Finding Different Versions of Your Favorite Science Fiction Stories

July 20th, 2009 by · No Comments · Uncategorized

One of the things I love to discover is different versions of a particular science fiction story. It’s fascinating seeing how a short story can transition into a novel or a movie. But my own favorites are the novels.
Two of the best-known stories that went from great short story to brilliant novel are Isaac Asimov’s Nightfall and Orson Scott Card’s Ender’s Game. Both were excellent stories in each instance.
The fascination comes in being able to see how the short story brings out the situation quickly, then resolves it, while the novel brings out the details, information and characters that bring the surrounding story to life.
Take Ender’s Game, for example. The short story is about a young boy who goes to Battle School, and saves the world from alien invasion without knowing it. The novel gets into how he gets into Battle School, more of his training, and what his family is doing. Much more depth, and not only did this make sequels possible, it allowed for more novels focused on one of the other children from Battle School. All well done.
It’s similar for Nightfall. A world with five suns that has never known night… except once every couple thousand years. The inhabitants don’t believe in night, save for a few religious crackpots, but scientists are discovering evidence that something indeed happens. The novel goes into further detail as to the discoveries as well as the aftermath, when much of the world has gone insane from the unfamiliar darkness.
But I also enjoy finding stories that aren’t so well known. Eric Frank Russell’s Plus X and variants thereof, for example. This is an interesting case because I like the shortest version best. EFR’s strength was definitely in shorter stories. His works are hard to find, appearing rarely in bookstores, but what booklover minds an excuse to haunt the local used bookstore?
I like best finding books that were made into movies, not movies made into books. It’s just interesting seeing where the movie had to make changes to how things went in the book, while a book can stay more true to a movie.
Dune is a prime example. The novel is great. The movie… depends on which one you like best. Some prefer David Lynch’s version, others the miniseries that aired on the Sci-Fi Channel. You can read reviews on each and get extremely different opinions.
I love it when I discover a new way to experience a story I’ve enjoyed, whether it be an older version or newer. There’s just something about it.

How to Secure Your Wireless Home Network with Windows XP

July 20th, 2009 by · No Comments · Uncategorized

In my experience as a computer support tech for residential customers I would estimate that 9 out of 10 home wireless networks are not properly secured and left open for anyone in range to use the internet connection or worse, hack into the files. Most people don’t even realize that their network is not secure. They buy a wireless router plug in all the cables and if they get an active internet connection from all PCs then they are done.
In this article I will show you how to secure your home network using Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) through a Preshared Key (PSK). WPA is the newest standard for securing home and small business networks. Most vendors now offer hardware and software that supports WPA including Windows XP SP2 which offers support for WPA using a Preshared Key (PSK) also known as a passphrase.
The first thing you need to do is log into your router and change your wireless network name from whatever default the router manufacturer has given it and create a passphrase. I would recommend doing this from a wired computer.
Once you are logged in to your router go to the wireless section. This will vary according to your router model but look for the fields labeled SSID and Passphrase. Now enter a value for each of these fields. It is a good idea to use some random characters in the SSID and enter a long string of all random characters for the passphrase. (I make my passpharse 50 characters; you can use up to 63).
TIP: Enter values for SSID and passphrase in notepad first so that you can just copy and paste them as you need them. This also decreases the chance of a typo.
While you are logged in to your router it may also be a good idea to change your router password from the default if you have not already done so.
Ok, now it is time to configure windows XP on your computer. First unplug your network cable from the back of your PC.
- Click on Start / Control Panel and double click the icon ‘Wireless Network Setup Wizard’. If you do not see this icon then your computer may not have Windows Service Pack 2 installed. Click on start / All Programs / Windows Update and download it.
- When the wizard pops up click next
- Copy your SSID from notepad into the field labeled ‘Network Name (SSID)’
- Select ‘Manually Assign a Network Key’
- Put a check in the box ‘Use WPA Encryption …’
- Click Next
On the next screen do the following:
- Uncheck the ‘Hide Characters as I Type’ checkbox
- Copy and paste your passphrase from notepad into the ‘Network Key’ field
- Click next
On the next screen you decide how you want to setup other devices on your network. If you have a USB Flash drive then choose that option, it will save you some time. You will simply have to plug the USB drive into any other wireless computer and the configuration is done automatically. If you do not have a USB flash drive just manually configure each computer in the same way as above.
Well that about covers it. You now have a secure wireless network.

Resume Writing Tips That Get You Noticed

When you are job hunting, your resume is a precious tool. Just about anybody has a resume, but there are feww prople who know how to write one in the proper way. If you are not getting the interviews that you want, you resume may need a little polishing. Follow these tips to spiff up your resume and get yourself noticed!
1. Focus your resume to reflect the career that you are seeking. Generic resumes even though they are convienient and easy are not very effective. Review the employment description for the position for which you are applying. Think: skills, knowledge and abilities and allow your resume to reflect your gifts for each requirement. Use industry buzzwords to show what you know about the industry that directly pertains to the job.
2. Focus and keep your objective short and sweet. Your objective should be directed towards your intended position and tie it into your experience, education and skills. Use powerful words like dynamic, experienced and qualified. Write one or two lines and definatley not more than three. Just make sure that those fews lines pack a real punch to get their attention to get to the interview, making them want to know more.
3. Use your resume as a marketing tool. Your resume should sell you to interviewers. It is your marketing tool as you sell yourself. Structure it in a way that it is easy to read, gets the interviewer’s attention and gets you an interview. Use bulleted lists and brief descriptions to explain your experience and skills. You are not writing a book, don’t go into great detail.
4. Your resume was created to get you the interview, not a job. You don’t have to explain in great detail every responsibility for every position that you have ever held. Highlight the jobs that you have held that tie into the position you are seeking. You can mention the other employment to fill in voids in time, but don’t feel compelled to go into great detail about those positions. Highlight your main positions you held in one section and list the less significant ones under a heading “Other Employment” or something similar.
5. Use a lot of action words. Your resume will really stand alone when you use descriptive words like negotiated, implemented, conceptualized and streamlined in your descriptions. These action words let your potential employer know that you are a “doer” and that you are assertive. Use the words that show what you have accomplished and can do, don’t just tell.
6. Jot down all of your strengths in the upper third of your resume. You have about 30 seconds to really impress the interviewer when they pick up your resume before they either move on to the next guys resume or pick up the phone to set up an interview with you. With that in mind have a powerful objective and step right into your expertise and skills. Also, use things that stand out in your resume such as symbols like %, # and $. For example, you led a team that increased its sales by more than 20%.
7. Create your resume to be easy to read. Stay away from long paragraphs and use bullet points to highlight instead. Be concise and get to the point. You want it to be easy to read and understand. Make sure that you don’t say anything to detract attention from what you can do and your qualifications.
Let your resume show who you are and what you can do for the employer. Use your resume to sell yourself and get your foot in the door with an interview. Try to keep your resume to one page while keeping it simple and to the point. Use these tips to make your resume rise to the top and get the job that you want.
